Leadership in energy and environmental design is a building certification process developed by the U.S. Green Building Council. It is a nonprofitable organization headquartered in Washington, D.C.
As one of the most famous building certification programs, USGBC works on standard procedures or frameworks to create healthy, cost-effective, and efficient buildings.
In terms of energy use, air quality, use of water, use of construction material, and disposal of a demolished building are some critical ways green buildings can positively impact the environment.
In the year 1993, LEED was developed by Natural Resources Defense Council. Later in the year 1996, it was co-chaired by engineers Tom Paladino and Lynn Barker of the LEED technical committee. The Leed rating system was officially unveiled in the year 2000, and today it covers all the aspects of the design and construction to the maintenance and operation of the building.
Key human and environmental health factors considered in LEED’s are sustainable Sites Development, Material & Resources, Innovation & Design Location, Water Saving, Indoor Environmental Quality, Location & Linkages, Energy Efficient & Atmosphere, Awareness & Education, and Regional Priority. Check the infographic below to learn more about the LEED rating system and certification process.
